Lights for Human Dignity

Lights for Human Dignity ~ Leave Your Lights On Election Eve!! http://www.lightsfordignity.org/ “This past Memorial Day eve, thousands of people across America sent a message of unity to the world against the atrocities committed in Abu Ghraib prison and against Americans and others in Iraq. As a symbolic act of respect for human dignity, lights were left shining in homes and houses of worship. Thank you for participating! Six months after reports exposed this dehumanizing abuse in Iraq, we continue to receive news of widespread brutality and violence. This shouts out the need for social justice and prison reform to bring about peace both abroad and here in the United States. We believe social justice and human dignity are non-partisan issues and are the cornerstones of every faith and religion throughout the world. On Monday night before the General Election, as we prepare to vote, The Interfaith Alliance asks that people engage in the simple, yet powerful act of leaving their lights on in homes, businesses, houses of worship, and community centers. We ask that you keep the symbolic lights of justice burning through the dawn of our Election Day. Let this act make a public statement that you are committed to civic participation in support of universal values of social justice and human dignity and that these values must be embraced by every society, including ours. On the eve of this critical election, please join us and let your light shine as a beacon that you are devoted to peace and justice in Iraq, in the United States, and around the world.” ---- Related Sites InterFaith Alliance http://www.tialliance.org/ InterFaith Alliance Links http://www.interfaithalliance.org/Election2004/Election2004List.cfm?c=84#denominational

Despairing Over Iraq and Dreaming of Another World?

No need to dream - [the international book] Peace is Possible , makes convincing case that another world is possible "People all over the world who despair and cry out in anger over the new Iraq war, should know more about the multifacetted and strong movement over the world that is now coming together to lay the foundations for a lasting peace. Read the personal stories of Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Jody Williams, Daniel Ellsberg, Howard Zinn and many others. In Peace is Possible we asked them to tell the stories of their victories in a way that would spellbind everyone - and even seasoned diplomats praise the book. Most often people initiatives, the «new, international superpower», is ignored by the mainstream media. This book shows citizens navigating the corridors of power - the more we all know of this work, much of it behind the scenes, the stronger we become. Peace is Possible Conference Nov 5,6,7

Peace is Possible A Conference on Establishing a Cabinet Level U.S. Department of Peace November 5th, 6th and 7th, 2004 Berkeley, California Scheduled to appear: Congressman Dennis Kucinich Marshall Rosenberg (Center for Nonviolent Communication) Marianne Williamson (Best-selling author and activist) and many more to be announced soon! Learn how to be an effective citizen advocate for the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace!

Please join us this November 5th, 6th and 7th in the San Francisco Bay Area for our Peace is Possible Conference. We will focus on the historic opportunity to establish a U.S. Department of Peace. Regardless what happens in the November election, this is a critical time to create a powerful citizens' peace campaign. The Department of Peace legislation, HR1673, is currently pending in the U.S. House of Representatives. The purpose of the Dept. would be to research, facilitate and articulate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflicts. The Department would provide the American president with a much-needed complement to a problem-solving approach dealing primarily with symptomatic rather than causal, underlying issues. By understanding and addressing the root causes of violence, we can predict and ameliorate a myriad of hostilities, improve national security, help protect human rights, and prevent and de-escalate armed international conflict. Not only will the Dept. of Peace be strong policy, but it will save the American tax payer billions of dollars, as well. The Dept. is an idea whose time has come, and yet the idea will not become a legislative reality unless each of us does our part to make it happen. To learn more about this legislation and how to get involved, visit our website at http://www.dopcampaign.org/.

- Re-engage in the democratic process - Hear amazing keynotes and diverse panel discussions - Participate in the dialogue and Q&A - Meet and connect with citizens from around the country working for peace in effective and focused ways.

WAGE A PRE-EMPTIVE PEACE:

- Discover how 2 percent of the annual defense budget can go toward proactive policies that dismantle the sources of domestic and international violence. - Establish a U.S. Peace Academy as sophisticated and effective as the U.S. Military Academy. - Learn how we can approach gang violence, racial and hate crimes, and even international conflicts with psychological and emotional powers as effective, and in many cases more so, than the application of brute force. - Help move the American political dialogue to a higher level conversation regarding the realities of both war and peace.

We hope to see you there!

How Much Can Our Hearts Take

We discovered this song and wept as we listened. It was written by a Mother/Son team out of New Mexico and is very moving. The most beautiful part is how it ends on a positive note. This is the link to the AUDIO http://www.consueloluz.com/au_hearts.ram and this is their website http://www.consueloluz.com/a_music_hearts.htm. You can also listen to it from our website http://omaha4peace.com

This is the view from our home in Omaha. We are activists which means we are awake and aware and working toward change.
